Record of the Year 2010. Sage Francis. Life.

Ten years ago I was twenty-two.

Twenty years ago I was twelve.

Thirty years ago I was two.

But when I came out my momma I was zero.

“Strange” is a word that has both followed and described Sage Francis throughout his career. Interestingly, his most recent album is probably best experienced as I did - without any prior knowledge of his back catalogue. Li(f)e isolates itself lyrically and sonically from Francis’ prior work. Going in expecting either hip hop norms or indie rock standards, there's good reason to argue that the record misses the mark. Far from commercial, Francis’ very American™ and very White® voice will never be commissioned to sell us Apple products – even in the impossible alternate universe wherein he would actually allow it. He falls timbrally somewhere between George Costanza and Penn Jillette. Looking back, it was

Why Ted Williams Makes Me Uneasy

Ted Williams, the homeless man with the golden radio voice, has captured the hearts of America.

*cue sappy music*

So why does this whole ordeal make me a bit queasy? First, let's recap what we know:

- Young Ted likes radio.
- Ted tries to get work in radio.
- After moderate success, Ted dedicates his life to drugs and alcohol.
- Somewhere along the way, Ted has nine kids.
- Ted becomes homeless, finds god, gets clean(?) and begs for money on the street.
- Video of Ted by local reporter goes viral, Ted finds himself buried under a plethora of golden job offers and media attention.

A rags to riches story? Maybe. But something still smells funny to me. Sure, the original video does tend to tug at the ol' heart strings; after all, who doesn't want to see Ted get his life back on track?

But I can't help but raise my brow at the universal out

Give Me Back Web 1.0.

Secretly, the internet of today terrifies me. Much like James Whitmore's character Brooks Hatlen in the Shawshank Redemption, I find myself able to navigate yet unable to understand the ever accelerating madness being pumped into my browser window at approximately 1.5 Mbps.

Years ago however, the screen scene was much different. When I first logged on as a spunky teen, the internet had already outgrown its infancy. Due to barriers-to-entry, the bulk of net users before my time were also programmers, and as such the web was mostly aimed at discussing itself. Well, that and nethack, of course.

But things changed. In the mid 1990's, around the time a giant Windows 95 banner could be seen hanging from Toronto's CN Tower, and the Empire State Building was pimping Microsoft colours, a new generation of nerds began to rise. For the first time in history, a
