Alcohol can be found in some of the earliest civilizations in recorded history and throughout the modern world. Heck it's not even unique to humans with many other monkey species preferring the nectar from overripe fruits. Addiction, however, is a different story. If your dealing with a drinking problem in America and seek a 12-step treatment you will learn that you need to change yourself in order to gain a greater insight into why you drink. So after a long reflective process that requires mental clarity and self realization and the support of the group and God you can begin to make these necessary changes. That's all fine and good for us Americans but if your Russian you may see things a bit differently. Why change yourself when the problem is not who you are as a person. Rather then seeing alcohol as a symptom of a larger problem they view alcohol as the problem.

How do Russian's deal with their problems well they get a pill implanted into their buttocks that releases a chemical that causes them to get very sick and possible die if they decide to drink. So they can either stop drinking altogether or be ready to dish out money for the antidote which is over double the price of the treatment itself. Link to story on npr of a reporter's experience going to Russia and seeing one of these clinics, which btw is the most popular treatment for alcohol in the country. People actually volunteer to get this procedure in order to stop drinking. It's makes me wonder if something like that would ever gain popularity in the US.
