Bedbugs: grossly unbiased.

http://howtogetridofbedbugsnow.com/bedbugpicture.jpg New York Times article by May Berenbaum on the resurgence of bedbugs in North America. Berenbaum searches for something positive to say about the little bastards and ends up stretching amusingly far.

For some reason I love reading about the crazy sexual behavior of insects and this article had a new one for me about those crazy bedbugs

"...and their sexual practices are bizarre even by insect standards: Because the female bedbug has no genital opening, the male inseminates her by using his hardened, sharpened genitalia to punch a hole through her abdomen. With no elaborate courtship ritual, males in a frenzied pursuit of sexual congress often blunder into and puncture the bodies of other males, occasionally inflicting fatal wounds."

This is a great example of evolution at work. The females select for males to sire their offspring that have better abilities when it comes to piercing their victims. I would imagine the benefits of being able to successfully pierce a female's abdomen carry's over to their ability to effectively pierce human skin.

Which leads me to wonder whether all the overweight americans will lead to selection pressure for male bedbugs to grow longer more pointy pokers leading to female bedbugs having to grow thicker abdomens.

Why did nobody tell me that this said "Grossly Unbaised" until now?

I thought maybe you were referring to the fact that bedbugs suck blood regardless of race, color, or previous condition of servitude, which is also grossly unbiased.
