Science Writing Is Going Out Of Style

http://www.edinburgschools.net-a.googlepages.com/detroit20science20center.gif/detroit20science20center-full.jpg Mallary Jean Tenore at Poynter Online put together this article full of science writers weighing in on the uptrend of people who could care less.

Charles Petit, who helps run the Knight Science Journalism Tracker, tracks stories like Angier's. His job has gotten easier in recent years because, simply put, there are fewer science stories to track.

Scientific American Edtior Mariette DiChristina said:

Why is it OK to know the specific batting average of a particular player and be proud of that but not be proud of knowing the elements of the Big Bang theory?"

I'd like to think that linkback functionality from idiotechnica.com is going to single-handedly solve this problem.

I'm kind of surprised at this. I mean sure; the general trend amongst the overall population is a decrease in scientific awareness, but the last decade has seen a massive spike in diverse ways to communicate and consume scientific knowledge; websites, blogs, podcasts, etc. News that was previously only accessible in journals is now very easily accessible to the entire world (except for China of course). I think the old ways of doing science journalism might be going out of style but only because it is changing into something new, and in a lot of ways better.

I am surprised by this as well. I hear people talking about science shows (History/Discovery/Science/NatGeo channel) / books pretty often, so I figured that would stimulate them to read about that stuff. But then again I'm still in college. I suspect once I go back to the regular world I'll hear far less about it.
