Ants can count?

Awesome video about an interesting new theory on ants presented in carton format. The video features a study that either cut off or placed little stilts on dessert ant legs in order to test the theory if ants could count. (see picture on left)

Want to make a guess before watching it as to how scientists might test whether a ant could count using the methods mentioned above.

Hint: most ant use scent to create trails from home to food and back again allowing them to get places without ever needing a GPS. Dessert ants, however, can not rely on scent in the hot arid dessert, instead these ants must rely on counting to accomplish these tasks so says the theory.

Want to try to remember how scientists tested whether a ant could count using the methods mentioned above.

Hint: Remember most ant use scent to create trails from home to food and back again allowing them to get places without ever needing a GPS. Dessert ants, however, can not rely on scent in the hot arid dessert, instead these ants must rely on counting to accomplish these tasks so says the theory.
