Transcendental Mediation shown to help heart disease patients

Researchers (at NIH) took a group of 201 black men who already had heart disease and randomly assigned them to one of two groups over a nine year period. In one group they received training on Transcendental Meditation technique and the other control group received health education classes in traditional risk factors, including dietary modification and exercise.

All participants continued standard medications and other usual medical care.

The study found:
-A 47 percent reduction in the combination of death, heart attacks, and strokes in the participants
-Clinically significant (5 mm Hg average) reduction in blood pressure associated with decrease in clinical events
-Significant reductions in psychological stress in the high-stress subgroup

I am always a bit skeptical of these claims. I plan to look into this practice some more. I did notice that the Transcendental Mediation is a trademark of Maharishi Mashesh Yogi (Beatles guru) and of course he will sell you his secret method for the low prices listed below.

Course Fees for Instruction in the Transcendental Meditation Program in the United States:

* Adult course fee: $1500
* Full-time student: $750
* Those in financial need, for example, retired people on fixed income, and single parents in need: $750
* Couple: $1500 + $750 for partner
* Children under 18 (if learning to meditate with a parent): $375

No. I read about the study on a science RSS feed earlier today. The article did not go into detail as to what exactly the transcendental mediation method was, so I looked it up and found this site. The study seems valid enough it was randomly controlled and conducted by a third party not affiliated with this group. Apparently this method is fairly popular right now it was on the today show and some other pseudonews shows. I have my doubts though. I think they should look at other possibilities like mediation treatments in general or what have you.

On the other hand I am not sure why the NIH decided to spend money studying this treatment in the first place. Also whether considering it's potential it is even ethical for this company to hold the patent. I am by no means endorsing it.

That was going to be my question. How did this study get approved over 9 years ago? Interesting stuff in any case. I wonder what the non-mediation class was like, and could it have been structured in a way that actually increased the participants stress levels? To be a tad reductionist: think of having a full time job, high blood pressure, and then having to attend an extra class on top of everything else, whereas the experimental group only had to experience "mandatory hippie time".
