Whip it
10/21/09 04:28 PM
Director: Drew Barrymore
Cast: Ellen Page, Juliett Lewis, Andrew Wilson, Jimmy Fallon, Drew Barrymore, Marcia Gay Harden, Daniel Stern
I think a lot of people thought this was going to be a rehash of Juno with the witty banter and comedy. It really goes in a totally different direction being a more serious coming of age story. Ellen Page is a introverted teen who starts to come out of her shell when she spontaneously joins a girls roller derby team? This causes problems at home where her mother, played by Marcia Gay Harden, is a bit domineering and is trying to get Ellen to participate in a beauty pageant. In typical coming of age story, she meets a boy, loses her virginity, fights with parents, enters into a rivalry (with Juliett Lewis from another rollerderby team) and strains the relationship with her best friend. The story was entertaining but 'by the numbers predictable'. The editing was awkward and although the sountrack was fun the songs were introduced in awkward places. My biggest complaint is that Ellen is supposed to be most at home while in the rink, but the weak action cinematography in the rink didn't really give justice to Ellen's experiences there. This movie was carried by the performances (some over the top but not out of line with the others) in spite of its akward pace. Fun and worth seeing in theaters but you won't miss anything if you wait for the rental.
A decent directing debut by Drew Barrymore 2.9 out of 5 stars

Not a big fan of Ellen page, but I enjoyed it. More for Landon Pigg, I guess. Heh. It was cute.

Virginia and I watched this tonight. It was a fun movie. I think Kristin Wiig stole the scenes she was in.

4 out of 5 stars for me. The vibe throughout the film was great to the point that I was a little sad when the movie ended. Even Mike said to me after it was over, I am ready to watch Whip 2 and see what happens next season. Drew did an excellent job directing, with so much of the idiosynarcies throughout and those odd kinda one liners that you seledom except being very typical of her own humor style. I will definelty add this movie to the collection.

I'm sure she has some redeeming quality that I'm just not aware of. For example, Alice Cooper is apparently an amazing golfer.
