techie question - how does one go about...

starting a photoblog?

i know that there are 'pre-made' versions like blogger and wordpress and countless others, but what if i want something more personal / customizable?

e.g. http://blursurfing.com/

how hard would the above be to replicate? i like the simple one shot at a time, no distractions look.

any help would be really appreciated :)

Well this is the tech. Looks like a PHP app, maybe running on an API.

It would be relatively trivial with Django or a PHP MVC. You could try Google Sites, too.

The main thing is that the visual complexity of the site says nothing about what goes into maintaining its and managing its data models. Wordpress's standalone option provides a robust and elegant way (for PHP anyway) to develop modular HTML for rendering web pages with dynamic data.

And in any case, websites aren't just flat text anymore. Most of the work comes from learning how the speak the language of numerous APIs (Wordpress's, Google's, JavaScript APIs, etc.).

let's say the most i've ever done with a website is probably customize my myspace page.

i would like to think i have a decent understanding of the process, but not much in the 'how-to' department.

from looking over the stuff at http://www.wordpress.org it seems like they try and make it idiotproof, but i'm pretty short on time until christmas and would like to get this running before then.

my ultimate goal is to have a site through which i can use motofoto (the tool on the blursurfing site that lets you sell photos).

once set up, how hard is it to upload photos to a blog like that... would it be similar to a set up that fb/gmail have?

Look, it can be easier. Set up a tumblr or a Wordpress account, or even Google Sites. Anywhere that gives you decent permission over your HTML. And you get a visible URL like http://quackmymotherfucking.com. Then just upload your images to a Dropbox account and organize them however you like.

Next build some HTML for your image gallery. The basic concept is that it's a list of images. (
<ul><li><a><img /></a></li></lol>
). And you can have lists of lists of lists, and so on.

Organize your list of photos, using whatever concepts you see fit (pages, tabs, strips, condoms, turtle shells, moustaches, etc). Then just lift some JavaScript gallery tool. It will turn those lists into clickable auto-masturbation interface jazz.

Preferably one stacked on a JavaScript Framework. That way configuring the damn thing won't be a venture into the archaic inner-workings of software development. Web designers, who are not developers, are writing "software" now. Designers. Not developers. Not programmers. People with degrees in Spanish. Etc.

But managing it? Kid's already got the WP Dashboard in his imagination.

All he needs is to manage those lists, and he wants to do that easily. He'll need some web software junk to help him do that. And what, learning Django models is a saturday afternoon coffee. Why not?

Installing WP yourself is trivial. Etc etc. He's making comparisons, I'm making comparisons.

I'd never recommend someone manage a flatfile website. What, SSI includes? What about history and backups?

What are _you_ suggesting?

SSI?

is this the dark ages?

why not manage a flatfile website? unless he is trying to become a master of CMS systems - just upload the files with incrementing integers for names and js them out the front end.  its not like its some major restructuring if he decides to go the other route later.   oh no, i hate to abandon this 10 line script!
