Eight years ago I took a summer job working in a truck yard, setting up bleachers and picking up garbage in the various Ottawa parks. My co-worker was a freshly immigrated Algerian man with a new baby at home. His name was Droneen and despite his anxious demeanor and quirky personality, I enjoyed working with him as he always kept positive, even when we were emptying garbage bins full of pet droppings into our stinky pickup truck. Droneen always swore to me that one day he would accomplish his dream of driving a city bus in Ottawa. And though he wasn't the most skilled truck driver, I supported him in his personal endeavor.

Tonight, 8 years later, I got on the bus at the General Hospital only to see a smiling Droneen proudly in the driver's seat - a full time Ottawa Transpo Bus Driver. He didn't recognize me until I told him who I was, which jogged his memory to eight years prior. I wanted to tell him that the very fact that he was driving a bus was incredibly inspiring to someone like me, currently struggling to accomplish my own goals. I wanted to tell him that he should be very proud of the life he has made for himself and his son in Canada, and that he is a prime example of the merits of hard work and persistence.

I wanted to tell him all these things, but the next words he spoke were: "Dylan! I did not recognize you! You have not grown up vertically, but you have very much grown out horizontally! Hahahaha!"

"Fuck you, Droneen."

I think I'll buy a car.

i have a similar story.

i had to help clean up garbage on the field at my church/school when i was a kid in preparation for some jesus fair they were having.

they paired me up with this "which way did he go george?" guy that was too old to be in school.

he was really nice and retarded when the nun introduced us. but once we got out in the field by ourselves he kept talking about penises and showed me dirty cartoon comics he had in his "which way did he go george?" overalls.

I don't think he touched me...either that or I blocked it out...but still...creepy.

your story would have been similar to Dylans had you recently met up with "George". Now it just looks like you really need to get something out in the open.

I have a sneaking suspicion that mike has been waiting a long time to tell that story.
