Canada vs. USA in Olympic hockey.

Are people freaking out in the US as well or is it just up in Canada?   I get the feeling our nationwide gung-ho-edness isn't quite mirrored by our winterless southern neighbours.

I think it is. I mean you have ten percent of our population. Supposing half of that plans to watch the games, I think it's reasonable that we have as many hockey or at least Olympic fans.

I think the difference is that if we lose, we won't drown our sorrows in poutine because the sport isn't that big here. It's an Olympic thing more than a hockey thing.

Here in Ottawa, the entire city is basically shut down.   People are packed into bars and the streets are completely void of life.      I assume it is about the same in Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton, Calgary, and whatever cities we have in the Maritime provinces.

Ooooh if only the winterless thing were true.

The people I know were pretty excited, though I doubt it was as much as our "friends" in the north. People in Detroit certainly are passionate about their hate for Crosby though, booooy howdy!

That was a great game. I'm definitely proud to be Canadian today.

I STILL think that Miller was the best goalie of it all.

Here in Winnipeg, the pubs were filled to the nuts. My aunt was at the mall and she said that in Polo Park Mall they had a massive TV set up to watch the game.

Also, the MTS center was selling tickets to watch the game there for like $5. I wish I could have been in there for Crosby's goal. My house was insane.

Great fucking game. Either team deserved it. I'm just glad we came back to take it into OT. I was talking to the players to tie it as if they could hear me within the last minute of the game.

And as everyone has said: hockey isn't as big in the US as it is in Canada. The media likes to cover specific stories and I've heard a few radio and TV shows criticize the coverage of US hockey games, but it's a double edged sword since they are the ones controlling the accessibility to games and coverage.

I'm definitely enjoying hockey more and more and I was planning on seeing my first NHL game this season but my finances (and time) have probably pushed it back to next year.

It annoys me to no end how the US doesn't fully respect many sports aside from football, baseball and somewhat basketball. The NHL is still not signed up for the 2014 Olympics to allow its players to join their nations for competition. Just shows how money is the main deciding factor in what's covered and what's swept under the mat.

Does Jacques Martin still coach?   He used to coach Ottawa.    This could be our common bond, old man.

i have no idea.

i like watching hockey, but its the only sport i watch that i dont really give a crap about the outcome.  We went to a game last season, but i couldnt tell you what happened before or after that game with regards to the panther's performance for the year. i dont even remember if they won that game.

I forgot when the game was being broadcast. I had planned to watch it but I went out for a walk on the beachfront walk to get out of the apartment for awhile.

While walking past some bars in Pacific Beach I kept hearing crowds chanting USA! USA! USA!
and then remembered the game was on. And I was really shocked that so many people in San Diego gave a shit about ice hockey.

As well as the Marlins and the Jaguars. Luckily the Dolphins are coming back and well, the Buccaneers are still a decent club despite the poor year. Florida just sucks in general for sports (aside from basketball)

its not the teams success

its the sport.

even when the dolphins suck suck suck people pay through the nose for tickets to the games.

the panthers could have a winning season but no one would pay more to see them.

i think the midlevel seats are like 25 bucks right now.

Miami is a football town, they'll always be at Dolphins games, the other sports need to be winning and in the playoffs in order for people to jump on the bandwagon. and if they win a championship, you'll be in the money if you own a pots and pans store.
